Magnesium Hydroxide Overview

Magnesium Hydroxide is an inorganic salt used as an antacid, effectively curing or reducing acidity in the gastrointestinal tract, including the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and anal canal. Chemignition is a leading manufacturer and exporter of Magnesium Hydroxide Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) worldwide. The company adheres to strict Quality Management Systems (QMS) to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs). This commitment to quality and regulatory standards ensures that the Magnesium Hydroxide produced by Chemignition is of the highest quality and efficacy.

Key Properties of Magnesium Hydroxide

Product Name: Magnesium Hydroxide
Synonyms: Magnesium dihydroxide
CAS No: 1309-42-8
Chemical Formula: Mg(OH)₂
Grade: IP/BP/USP
Appearance: White powder or fine crystals
Molar Mass: 58.32 g/mol
Solubility: Sparingly soluble in water

Manufacturing process of Magnesium Hydroxide

Before starting the process operation, ensure the cleanliness of the equipment, confirm the availability of utilities, and verify that all raw materials and packing materials are available.

Charge magnesium chloride solution in the reactor and adding a sodium hydroxide solution under controlled stirring. The reaction temperature is maintained at 20–30°C to precipitate magnesium hydroxide.

The product is filtered using a centrifuge and washed with deionized water to remove impurities. The wet cake is dried in a vacuum dryer at 50–60°C for 360-480 minutes. The dried product is then milled to achieve uniform particle size and sieved through the specified mesh for consistency.

Pack Magnesium Hydroxide in a clear poly bag and twist the mouth of the bag. Secure it with a PVC strip. Place this bag inside another poly bag, twist its mouth, and secure it with a PVC strip. Finally, place the sealed bag in an HDPE container. Store Magnesium Hydroxide in a tightly closed, light-resistant container at a temperature below 30°C.

Applications of Magnesium Hydroxide

Therapeutic Uses
Antacid for Acid Indigestion and Heartburn
Magnesium hydroxide is commonly used as an antacid to neutralize stomach acid. It provides relief from symptoms of heartburn, acid indigestion, and upset stomach by raising the pH level in the stomach and reducing acid buildup.
Laxative for Constipation
Magnesium hydroxide is also used as a mild laxative to treat constipation. By drawing water into the intestines, it helps soften stools and promotes regular bowel movements. It is typically used for short-term relief of constipation.
Magnesium Supplement
Magnesium hydroxide is sometimes used as a source of magnesium in individuals who have low magnesium levels. It helps maintain normal muscle and nerve function, support the immune system, and regulate blood sugar and blood pressure.

Industrial Uses
Pharmaceutical Formulations
Magnesium hydroxide is a key ingredient in over-the-counter antacid and laxative preparations. It is commonly found in oral suspension, chewable tablets, and capsules, and is often combined with other active ingredients to improve therapeutic effects.
R&D and Formulation Development
Magnesium hydroxide is widely researched for its role in developing sustained-release formulations and its potential use in combination therapies for gastrointestinal disorders. Its applications are also being explored in developing magnesium-based formulations for various health conditions, including magnesium deficiency.
