Disodium Hydrogen Citrate is generally manufactured by the controlled partial neutralisation of Citric Acid with a suitable sodium alkali, commonly Sodium Hydroxide or Sodium Carbonate.
Citric Acid is dissolved in purified water under continuous stirring. A calculated quantity of the sodium alkali is then added gradually while controlling the temperature and pH to achieve partial neutralisation and form Disodium Hydrogen Citrate. The reaction solution is clarified or filtered, if required, to remove insoluble matter.
C₆H₈O₇ + 2 NaOH → Na₂HC₆H₅O₇ + 2 H₂O
The clear solution is then concentrated under controlled conditions, followed by crystallisation. The resulting crystals are separated by filtration or centrifugation, suitably dried, sieved to obtain the required particle size, tested against the applicable specification, and packed in moisture-protective containers.
